NICU Bands

These are the NICU bands that we have worn since July 21st.  

They indicate we are parents to a NICU child and allow us into the NICU.  Can't wait until they can come off...

Hearing Tests

The girls had their 1st hearing test the other day.  The nurse puts 'ear muffs' over their ears and electrodes on their head and body to monitor stimulation.  We are very excited to announce that both girls passed their hearing tests with flying colors!

Oxygen

The nurses and doctors are going to try again to take both the girls off their oxygen again.  We've tried this a couple of times with no such luck, however, the girls seemed to handle breathing on their own much better this time.  We'll have to wait and see how long they last.

They do like each other...

John was holding the girls and they somehow managed to snuggle together.  

Yes, that is Evie's hand in Ada's mouth.  

Every time Evie moved her hand, Ada cried.

The girls had their hand and foot prints taken today.

Eye Doctor Visit

Today the girls had their first eye appointment.  The reason they have their eyes checked so early is because they need to ensure proper development, not only because they are premies, but also because they were on the ventilation and are still on oxygen.

The eye doctor made us leave the room, 'because this is not something that parents should see.'  We could hear them screaming and crying from down the hall.  It was all very sad...

Poop

Yes, our beautiful baby Ada managed to be first...

The first to poop through her clothes onto Sarah.

We didn't notice at first, not until John took her and got it on him too...

But how can you be upset when she's so cute?

I'm sure Evie will have a follow up performance soon enough.

Eating

The girls are starting to eat now!  

This is a big step for them.

To start they get 4 attempts at eating when they show signs of wanting to eat.  

When Sarah is there they breast feed and do a decent job of it.  

When we can't be there they get breast milk from a bottle, and don't like that as much!

Since the only big news is breast feeding, didn't really want to post any pictures of that, sorry.

First Bath

The girls had their first bath tonight and loved it...

They get a "swaddle bath"

They stay swaddled up in a blanket in the water and you only pull out one extremity at a time and wash it. Both girls really enjoyed the baths.

Update

Here's yet another update on the girls and how they're doing...

They have graduated out of their iso-let beds and are now in "cribs"

Ada is breathing on her own and doing well

Evie is breathing but getting a higher percent of oxygen to help with the saturation of her breathing.  

They are both at about their birth weight, or slightly more.

Right now we're just waiting for them to give "feeding cues"

Once they do this they can start with attempting to feed by a bottle and actually eat.

Overall the doctor said they're doing good and we just have to wait.
